The weak-kneed men and submissive women who are leaving no stone unturned to ignore SIXTY-TWO women, and an ADMISSION of guilt by Bill Cosby himself , which led to a guilty verdict in his sexual assault case, are being foolish. They claim to be trying to defend Bill from what they characterize as a “public lynching,” but they fail to recognize that bigotry entails much more than just racism. Sexism is also a form of bigotry, and male supremacist bigotry is exactly what Cosby was engaged in. . Women are just as oppressed by sexism as Black men are by racism, and both are preventing the Black community from moving forward, because Black men and women can never come together to fight the evils of racism until Black men begin to recognize their own bigotry in the oppression of women. These men never stop to consider that while Black men only have to fight White supremacy, Black women are forced to fight both the bigotry of White supremacy, and male supremacy, in both society, and in their very own community. . This is not only grossly unfair to women, but it also has a severe impact on the Black community as a whole. In order for the community to move forward, Black men and women must work as a team to address the evils of White supremacy, but we can never be a team in the fight against racism as long as Black men suffer from the exact same disease as the White bigots we’re suppose to be fighting. .
One of the biggest obstacles to Black progress is the breakdown of the Black family, and the primary cause of that breakdown is the Black man’s need to compensate for his loss of manhood at the hands of the White man by oppressing Black women in the very same way that he’s being oppressed. Many weaker Black men tend to engage in abusive and bigoted behavior toward Black women because it gives them the sense of power and manhood that they lack in society as a whole. They’re like a wimp who’s afraid to fight another man so he goes home and slap his wife. . It’s simple psychology - the weaker the man, the more oppressive and inflexible he is in his attitude toward women. And that’s completely understandable, because what’s left of his manhood is totally dependent upon the subjugation of women. Clear evidence of that is the stronger the woman, the more hostile weak men tend to be toward her. That’s what’s led to the hostility toward the women who had the courage to standup against Cosby. They’re strength and determination is a direct threat to the security of weak-kneed men, so such men use the pretext of defending Cosby from the racist agenda of these "conniving" women in order to promote their own bigotry, and to maintain a culture of male supremacy - and the misguided women who follow their lead have simply been beaten down over the years. They’ve been oppressed for so long that they simply accept it as a way of life. . So the women who have come out against Bill Cosby and other so-called powerful men are doing exactly what they should be doing. In fact, if more week-kneed men would wake up and take a page out of their book in their own fight against bigotry and political oppression, there would be no Donald Trump, much less economic inequity, and this would be a much more stable society for the poor and middle class. I'd like to point out to Bill Cosby's ardent defenders that this isn’t Cliff Huxtable, or “America’s dad,” that your defending, this is Bill Cosby, a turkey who had a wife and young family, yet spent more time at the Playboy mansion than Hugh Hefner. He also had a penchant for speaking down to Black people as though we were children. Bill was rich, beloved, and famous, so he might have easily been able to get consensual sex from many of the 62 women (count ‘em SIXTY-TWO!!!) who have come out against him. But he didn’t want that. He wanted to drug them and steal it - in other words, RAPE THEM. That was a part of his bigoted perversion - he didn’t just want to have sex, he wanted to humiliate and shame them. And yes, it was bigotry. Male supremacy is a more rampant form of bigotry in this society than even White supremacy, because, as the Cosby case clearly demonstrates, even Black males engage in it, but it’s so routine that most of us have simply accepted it as a way of life.

Think about it - even as we’re screaming about Bill Cosby being treated unfairly due to his race, we don’t seem to give a damn about the SIXTY-TWO woman who are complaining about his bigoted male perversion against them; we want to slut-shame them instead - that's bigotry. So congratulations, now you know the mindset of White jurors who let murderous cops go free after they shoot down innocent Black people in the street like dogs. Thus, you don’t have to be White to be a bigot - you’re just a different kind of bigot.

USA Today reported that “For Juror No. 1 in Bill Cosby's retrial, it was the comedian/actor's own admission that he drugged women that helped the juror determine Cosby was guilty on three counts of aggravated indecent assault. . “Snyder pinpointed Cosby's 2005 deposition as the evidence that pointed him towards guilty. In a 2005 deposition, Cosby acknowledged he acquired drugs, including the now-banned sedative quaaludes, to give to women he sought for sex. It's now being asked would you be in your current position if you were White? Well, maybe, and maybe not. But that’s not the issue here. The issue is whether or not you actually committed what you're alleged to have done to these 60 (count ‘em - SIXTY!) women - period. If you’re found guilty of this crime - and personally, I think you are - that’s a form of bigotry as well. It’s called sexism, or misogyny, so you're in no position to be whining about discrimination. If you were a White homosexual accused of abusing 60 Black men in the exact same manner, the narrative would be completely different. There'd be demonstrations all over this country screaming for your head. So why should we be any less outraged over what you’re alleged to have done to these women?

America really needs to wake up - and especially Black people. Sexual bigotry is just as disgusting as racial bigotry. In spite of the fact that if many of us had to depend on our father's to stand by us as children we would have long since starved to death, women are not only discriminated against as Black people, but as women, and not only by the White establishment, but by America as a whole - and that includes the Black community. While we no longer tolerate the use of the "N-word" in this society, we don't hesitate to put out videos that are disseminated all over the world calling Black women "bitches" and hoes"as entertainment - and these are videos created by Black men! So I don't want to hear a damn thing about you being discriminated against, not in this case, because if you're found guilty of the charges lodged against you, you're just as much of a bigot as the Grand Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan. You're just a different kind of bigot.

When I first heard the allegations against Bill Cosby it literally made my stomach go weak. I listened for undated reports hoping to hear that it was all some kind of scam initiated by an irate or greedy woman who was simply trying to get into his pocket. I felt what I can only call a vested interest in that being the case, just as I suspect that many of his defenders and apologists are feeling today. . After all, this was a Black man who was world renown as "America’s favorite dad." That was saying something - even many bigots liked and respected him. He commanded much of the moral stature of President Barack Obama, before there was a President Obama. He was one of the few Black men in the media who was portrayed in a positive light, and his very presence gave me the feeling that maybe there was hope for America after all. . But I learned early on as both a writer, and twenty years as a paralegal, that I must always give truth priority over what I want to believe, and to always follow truth wherever it leads and regardless to whose ox it gores - that’s one of the primary reasons that at one point or another I offend almost everybody. But I have to think that way in order to be an effective and creditable writer, otherwise all I would be is a liberal-leaning imitation of Fox News. So while I recognize that I don’t corner the market on either wisdom, intellect, or knowledge, I want the reader to have confidence in the fact that I’m writing what I truly believe to be the facts - whether I’m right or wrong - and not trying to bend the facts to promote some kind of pet agenda. . So regardless to what I previously thought of Bill Cosby, it has been reported that as many as sixty women (count ‘em, SIXTY!) have come forward and alleged that he either raped, attempted to rape, or abused them in some way. If these women are found to be credible, in civil law that would constitute the "preponderance of the evidence," and in criminal law, "beyond a reasonable doubt." So that alone would be grounds to find him guilty. Thus, as much as I would love to wake up and find that this was all a dream and see Bill restored to his former spotless stature, I’m not going to try to delude myself to make that happen, and that’s exactly what I think many of Bill’s defenders are trying to do, much like the Republicans did with the "Birther Conspiracy." Many conservatives just couldn’t wrap their heads around the fact that America had elected a Black man President of the United States, so instead of simply accepting it, they slipped into a state of delusion to try to deny his legitimacy. . That's exactly what Cosby’s defenders are doing. They just can't wrap their heads around the idea that a man who they've loved and respected all these years is some kind of sexual pervert - and that's exactly what I think he is, because with all of his wealth and fame Bill didn't have to get sex the way it's alleged that he did. Many of these women, or at least some of them, might have given in to him willingly, but he didn't want consensual sex - his sexual perversion required him to steal it - and for me, the word of sixty women says that's a fact. . Nevertheless, his defenders are insisting that America is jumping the gun in condemning Bill. They claim that none of the allegations have been substantiated, but at the very same time many of them would have us believe the totally unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that a powerful cartel of bigots set this up to bring Cosby down in order to prevent him from buying NBC. Now I’m not saying that the White elitist establishment is not capable of such conduct, but even if they tried, one would think that they’d have had sense enough to use just two, three, or maybe even five women who could be effectively managed, not sixty! With that many people involved, what are the chances that the conspiracy wouldn’t be leaked by at least one of them who came down with an attack of conscience, or for some other reason? In addition, it would give Cosby’s legal team many more opportunities to poke holes in the scam. So to use sixty women in a conspiracy would be both dumb, and ridiculously over the top. I think any good lawyer would have told them that, and presumably, they’d be able to obtain the very best legal advice available. . Another flaw in the conspiracy theory is it’s designed to suggest that we should take the word of ONE man over SIXTY women. That's not only ridiculous, but it clearly demonstrates this society’s sexist mentality. To even suggest that all of these women are lying as part of a conspiracy that "they" cooked up in order to bring Bill down could be shot down in flames with just one question - Who is this "they" you keep talking about?" Give me a name - just one. . So while I would really love to support this Black man, my sense of truth tells me that he's lying, he's guilty, and as a people we have a responsibility to protect the very womb of our society. And once again - because this bears repeating over and over again - to even suggest that we should take the word of one man over sixty women is a prime example of just how bigoted we are in this society. Women and Black people should know better, because given our long experience and hardship as a result of bigotry, there are very few things on this Earth more stupid than a bigoted Black person, female, or Jew - and thanks to Donald Trump and the religious right's "fools for Jesus" movement, I can now add Muslims and Mexicans to that list. . This episode is also a prime example of just how effective our media is in shaping our attitudes and opinions. Think about it. Most of us have been loved, raised, and nurtured by a woman, so how could we possibly grow up to feel that just one man’s word should have more value than the word of sixty women!!!? And again, what really makes me scratch my head is how many women are buying into this "horrible women, poor little innocent billionaire" mentality!!! We certainly couldn’t have form this attitude regarding the relative worth of men and women due to the character of men, because if many of us had to depend on our father’s to feed, clothe, and raise us, we would have starved to death in childhood. So as a society, this should be a teaching moment that causes us to re-examine not only our attitude toward women, but all of our attitudes and beliefs. . Nevertheless, Bill's diehard defenders seem to think their trump card is, "But why are these women just coming out now? Why didn't they come out right after the incident?" That's very simple - the reason that they all started coming out at once is because they were afraid to come out against the wealth, fame, and power of Bill Cosby alone. People fear power, but when others started coming out they said, "Hey, he did that to me too!" Now they were no longer alone - or, little me, against big Bill. There are probably many others who still haven't come out. . But when I try to explain that to Bill's defenders, they continue to insist that I’m being unfair to Bill because I'm convicting him without a trial. So all of a sudden they seem to have found Jesus in our judicial system - the very same judicial system that declared George Zimmerman innocent, and treat many of the rogue cops, who are shooting down our kids on the street like rabid dogs, like they're performing a public service. So one can't help but ask, when, and why, have they all of a sudden developed this new-found faith in the courts? Black lives matter, and so do female vaginas. Our children weren't born to be used as target practice for rogue cops, and a woman's vagina is not a toy designed for the entertainment of big shot billionaires. Thus, society has got to be firm in making that message abundantly clear - court, or no court. . Now, I might be wrong regarding what I'm about to say, because as I pointed out above, I don’t claim to corner the market on either knowledge or intellect, but personally, I think Bill’s legal team knows that he’s guilty, and they also know that if they can't find a technicality to get him out of this, "Dr. Huxtable" is going to the joint. That’s why he’s going to court unshaven, walking with a cane, and acting like he can barely get up the steps without help from his attorneys. They’re already preparing for his sentencing hearing. They’re going to claim that Bill is so sickly that he can’t survive a stint in the joint, so to sentence him to prison would amount to the death penalty, and therefore, constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Thus, he should be given probation and public service for the rape and sexual abuse of a multitude of women. Oh, really!!!? .

But that's our judicial system for you. It's pocked full of loopholes for the rich and powerful, and it accommodates all manner of convoluted logic which allows it to do absolutely whatever it wants to do - they're trying to have Bill's case dismissed on a technicality even as I write. That's why our prisons are filled with poor Black people, and George W. Bush and Dick Cheney - who have committed more heinous crimes than all of the criminals in all of the prisons in America collectively - are walking around free. . True justice is nothing but an illusion in America, as is clearly demonstrated by the plight of these sixty women, and any one of them could very easily be our daughter, sister, or granddaughter. So I'm not going to allow myself to be distracted by what color Bill is. I have no interest in factionalism - a predatory pervert is a pervert. This is not a racial issue. It's about defending the dignity of women. We're knee-deep in a class war in which women are considered a part of the lower class, and America will do well to never forget that. So thanks for the memories, Bill, but you've got to go down, brother - and if the courts don't do it, we've got to do it as a society. . And I don’t think I'm being unfair in not waiting for the court before making up my mind about Bill. I’m merely measuring him with his own yardstick, and you can't be any more fair than that, can you? I’m about to throw you a curve here, Milton. I’m sure it’s going to strike you as beyond curious that during these dire political times one of your most strident political columnists would be writing you about music. But mark my words, I’m discussing much more than simply music here. This article describes an auspicious event that’s taking place in the world of jazz, which, for over a hundred years has always signaled a significant change in our political environment. So please don’t confuse this with a music review. Music is just the backdrop. My actual intent is to allow our readers to become a witness to history. Let me explain what I mean:

For over a century the developments in jazz have always been a harbinger of things to come. It was jazz that made the Roaring Twenties roar, with people like Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller. It was also jazz that sustained us through the Great Depression of the thirties, with the driving big bands of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Chick Web, bringing along great ladies like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Later, jazz bolstered our troops to defeat fascism during WWII with people like Benny Goodman and Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. Then after the war, the celebratory sounds of bebop appeared on the scene, with Charlie parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and the fabulous Sarah Vaughan to usher in an era of the most sustained prosperity that this country has ever known. Then during the fifties and sixties Miles and Trane took over the reins to signal the emergence of a new Black consciousness, and the birth of a generation of Black people who were unwilling to "take their place" on the back of the bus.

Now, due to the harmonic complexity and sophistication of jazz, it’s certainly not the most popular music in the country, since much of it is beyond the easy grasp of the masses. But that doesn’t make it any less influential in shaping the thinking of the people, because due to the musical innovations that continue to take place within its insulated world, jazz invariably defines the course of the music that the masses can understand. Thus, over the years, jazz has unfailingly defined the tenor of our times, and so it is again.

One day a musician friend of mine approached me and said he wanted me to hear a CD. I'm an old school musician - Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Mile Davis, etc. - so I'm not very big on today’s commercialism, but since he was a friend and fellow sax player, I agreed to take a listen.

The CD was the work of a lady by the name of Rita Edmond, a name that I hadn’t ever heard before, but before this sister got to the bridge of the first chorus of the tune, I knew this wasn't just another singer. It was clear to me that this woman was a talent on the level of Ella, Sarah, and Dinah Washington. So when my friend saw my reaction, he started telling me that he could get me a copy of the CD, but I told him, "No, I want this one," and I literally SEIZED the CD from the brother. I threw some money on the hood of his car, and went to the park and spent hours listening to this fabulous lady, and I found every tune on the CD to be just as good or better than the one before. Thereafter, I broke my policy of only writing about politics, and plunged into an article about this very special lady.

Ms Edmond is not just an entertainer, she’s a harbinger of a new era, so her discrete and unheralded arrival on the jazz scene is indeed ironic. She should have been welcomed with blaring horns, because her very presence signals the end of an era of gross mediocrity in the country, and in modern jazz.

Perhaps that’s why in spite of the fact that she’s getting the accolades of flawless reviews, invited to open Dodger games, and being sought out to sing at celebrity weddings, the industry as a whole is doing its very best to blot her out. You see, the industry is a step ahead of us. They understand what Ms Edmond represents - a frontal assault on the forces of mediocrity.

Rita Edmond looms as a serious threat to both the business and the political interests of those who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. If the masses begin to embrace Ms Edmond as the standard that defines talent, excellence, and class, the millions of dollars that the industry has spent to promote mediocrity will go for naught. And on a political level, Ms Edmond’s style, professionalism, and focused pursuit of excellence is absolutely toxic to the media’s attempt to dumb-down America.

Rita has produced two CDs so far - “Sketches of A Dream” and “A Glance at Destiny,” (which she certainly is). And she came out the gate jumping in with both feet. On both CDs she tackles standards and signature songs by some of the best singers who ever lived, and she didn’t come up short once. Every song she does is either comparable or better than the version that made it famous - and any song on either of the two CDs could serve as the title song of the CD itself.

And we’re not talkin’ fillers, here. On both CDs you definitely get your money’s worth. On the CD, "Sketches of a Dream," she does Dindi, Star Eyes, You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To, Body And Soul, All The Way, On The Street Where You Live, My Romance, Never Let Me Go, Day By Day, Out of Nowhere, Just In Time, Here’s That Rainy Day, You Stepped Out Of A Dream, Misty, Almost Like Being In Love, and Our Love Is Here To Stay. And the CD, "A Glance at Destiny", is just as formidable, where she does songs like Sunny, You’ve Changed, It Might As Well Be Spring, and You Don’t Know What Love Is.

Of particular note on "A Glance At Destiny," Ms Edmond does Here’s To Life.That song has been done by some of the greatest singers in the world, both living and dead, but Rita has made that song her own. I challenge anyone who’s ever dedicated their life to fighting the good fight to try to get through that song with dry eyes. I’ve listened to it hundreds of times now, and I haven’t been successful yet.

So yes, Rita Edmond is far from just another entertainer. This lady is the consummate artist. While she has a four octave range, unlike lesser singers, she never uses it frivolously just to say to the audience “look what I can do.” She never over-sings, and she never under-sings. She always puts the music first, and only dips into her formidable resources when the music demands it. In fact, every time she sings a song, it serves as a tribute to the composer.

Yet, she puts her undeniable stamp on every song she sings, but again, not with frivolous and over-the-top embellishments, but with pure passion, and the power of excellence. The emotion in her ballads drip like honey, and she swings with the effortless finesse of a Bentley cruising down Pacific Coast Highway.

Clear evidence of my assessment of Ms Edmond can be found in a YouTube video of her appearing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She does“Embraceable You” with Harold Land, Jr. on keyboard. Her performance is simply flawless. The only thing missing is the melodic tones of Charlie Parker in the background. Bird would have loved her, because even as a relatively young woman, she belongs to his world.

I'm a big time hater. I hate what I see happening to this country, and I hate watching the development of a culture that embraces ignorance with a stupid sense of pride. So yes, I am indeed a hater, but not only that - I'm a hater with a very low threshold for bullshit, so step off.
