No one can deny that racism is holding the Black community down - but it’s not just White racism, it’s also the racist attitudes that some Black people have against other Black people. I’ve said this many times before, but I’m going to say it again. Black people are the product of the very same racist environment as White people, so many of the weaker-minded among us are just as racist towards other Black people as any sheet-wearing Hillbilly. I call it "bligotry" - Black-on-Black bigotry.

As a direct result of Bligotry, we refuse to patronize one another’s business efforts, and many Black business owners try to get rich on one sell when more enlightened Black people even try to patronize them. As a result, we can’t come together to get a financial foothold in society. So we’re not going to be able to address the issue of Black upward mobility until we begin to see bligotry for what it really is. And no, bligotry it’s not self-hatred, as many people suggest, because in order to be a self-hating Black person, you have to recognize your Blackness.

People who suffer from bligotry don’t hate themselves at all, and neither do they, necessarily, hate other Black people. They simply look upon Black people with disdain, and they think that we're beneath them as individuals. You’ll often hear them say among themselves things like, "You know how niggas are" - meaning, "those others."
.
That’s why such people think they’re qualified to tell the Black community what to think. They've convinced themselves that they're an intellectual aberration that an accident of birth caused to be born with Black skin. They know they’re Black, and they love the idea of having "soul" and "rhythm." They also like being able to lay-claim to people like Ray Charles, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane - but they tend to believe there’s a distinct genetic difference between themselves and those "ignit niggas."

They think they’re what Black people were intended to be, but the average Black person is some sort of inferior genetic mutation. That explains why generally the first thing that comes out of the mouths of people like Allen West, Larry Elder, Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes, or a Ben Carson, is an attack on Black people, generally using President Obama as their Black "poster boy." But let there be no doubt about it, when they attack Barack Obama, they’re just using the president as a symbol to attack us all.

That’s why they have such unfathomable political views, because they’re politics consist of two issues - first, self-service, and secondly, to declare to the world that "I’m different from those other Black people that you don’t like; and I don’t blame you for not liking ‘em, because I don’t like ‘em either." That’s the extent of their political views.

But not all Un-niggas are conservative. Some go to the other extreme. People like Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, and Boyce Watkins fall into this group. While they too play into conservatives’ hands, they take a different tact. They embrace what I call the "Moses Syndrome." These Un-niggas believe that Black people are so stupid that we need them to lead us. But since their primary agenda is exactly the same as the conservative un-nigga - self-service, and to prove to the world that they are more "special" than the average Black person - the minute the Black community’s interest is in conflict with their own, Black people can just stand by to have their throats cut. That explains why one minute Cornel West can be in front of a crowd spewing the most militant Black rhetoric, and the next minute can be sitting on a television panel with the reincarnation of Adolph Hitler, and refer to him as "my dear brother Adolph."

The reason for that is, his primary agenda is not to move the Black community forward. His primary agenda is to be seen, and to gain public admiration and approval. That also explains why in spite of all of his rhetoric with respect to his love for Black people, and in spite of how dire the need for quality educators in the Black community, West has never taught in a Black setting in his entire career. The fact is, it’s personally inconvenient for him. It’s one of those cases where the Black community’s needs are in conflict with his own, so we lose.

West gains more personal wealth and fame at Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, teaching the sons and daughters of the people that he’s constantly telling us is the enemy. So the only time you’ll see Cornel West at a predominantly Black institution is if they pay him $30,000 to do a one-hour drive-by.

Thus, the Un-niggas don’t see the Black community as one people. They’re segregationists. They divide our community into two segments - sophisticated and intelligent Black people "like themselves" (generally including all light-
skinned Black people and ALL beautiful sisters, whether intelligent or not), and those other niggas who are holding them down. So they feel they have every right to use and victimize "those others" to advance themselves to their "rightful" place in society - thus, Tavis Smiley and the Wells Fargo "Ghetto Loan" scam. And unfortunately, far too many Black preachers are among the Un-niggas.

Herman Cain described their attitude best when he said, "I'm a brother from another mother." They tend to think they're cut from a different clothe than other Black people, and are therefore, superior. That's why many such people hate President Obama so passionately, because his very presence is a pie in the face of their delusions of grandeur. Their attitude is, "How in the Hell did that nigga get to the White House over me?" And if you listen closely to what they’re actually saying, the message is, "Aw, Obama ain’t all that; he’s just another nigga like you - I’m the one you should be lookin’ up to - I’m the true Un-nigga."

It’s this kind of attitude by some Black people that’s holding us down. They cause division and strife within the Black community.

Self-Hatred Running Rampant Among Black People

A MISSISSIPPI STATE OF MIND

This is a reprise of an article that I did on August 8, 2008. I do retrospectives from time to time, because the 20/20 perspective of hindsight tends to place people and issues in perspective. Of particular interest in this article is the hubris and arrogance of Tavis Smiley and Cornel West when they were riding high in the Black community. Notice how they seemed to think that they held so much clout in the Black community that they felt that the, then, Sen. Obama, essentially had to get their approval to run for president.

Also of note, is how Cornel West is scolding Sen. Obama for making the decision to declare his candidacy for President of the United States while standing in the shadow of Lincoln’s former statehouse in Springfield, Ill. instead of doing it on Tavis’ show. West says that Obama’s failure to come on Tavis’ show demonstrates that "this isn’t about us," as though Tavis’ show represented the Black community. And ironically, while West is declaring that Obama’s failure to appear demonstrates that Obama is "surrounded by people who can't be trusted," a Wells Fargo logo goes floating by behind him. The irony is, even as he spoke of trust, Tavis Smiley was engaged in roping poor and middle-class minorities into what later became known as the Wells Fargo "Ghetto Loan Scam," in which over 30 thousand poor and middle-class minorities were fleeced, many losing their homes and life savings. The Department of Justice declared it the second largest housing discrimination case in the nation’s history.

As a Black man who is old enough to remember the courageously focused and determined lives of both Malcolm and Martin Luther King and their gruesome and untimely deaths, and educated enough to be cognizant of the painful sacrifices that generations of Black people have endured to make this, Barack Obama's moment - our moment - in history possible, I simply cannot find the words to adequately express my feelings of deep frustration and disgust towards the young brothers who heckled Sen. Obama during his St. Petersburg speech. For the very first time in my life, words completely fail me, but I now have a much better understanding of why the penalty for treason is so severe.
.
Perhaps this example of mindless idiocy will give other Black people pause, however. Perhaps it will help those who tend to nitpick Sen. Obama to death to recognize that they, just like the hecklers in St. Petersburg, are mounting a meaningless assault on all of the hopes, dreams, and prayers whispered by millions of Black people from the day we first set foot on American soil.

It is for precisely that reason that the hecklers have undoubtedly earned themselves a footnote in history. Considering the Black experience in America, their thoughtless irresponsibility will certainly stand out as one of the most stupid acts of self-mutilation in the history of mankind. But unfortunately, in the process they've managed to also taint the more thoughtful Black people in our community as well, since posterity will undoubtedly point to their ignorance as a prime example of why Black people, as a whole, have found it such an arduous struggle to rise above what has unfortunately become our station - at the very bottom of this society.

It's easy to indulge in hyperbole, however. One should always substantiate one's assertions, so allow me to take a moment to build a simple scenario as proof of the St. Petersburg stupidity:

If you're about to be lynched and a brother comes to your rescue, what kind of fool would stop his rescuer just as he's taking the rope away from around your neck, to say, "Wait a minute. I want to ask you a question before you touch this rope - why haven't you spoken out with more vigor in support of Affirmative Action?" Needless to say, such an act would represent the height of stupidity, but that's exactly what the St. Petersburg hecklers, and to a lesser extent, many other Black self-haters are doing during this election - and unnecessarily, since there was going to be a question and answer period after the speech anyway.
.
I simply can't believe how stupid and shortsighted some of our people are proving themselves to be. It goes beyond stupid - it's a national embarrassment to every Black person with a brain. And in many cases, these are highly educated Black people. I began to suspect that we had a problem when Dr. Cornel West acted a fool on Tavis Smiley's "State of Black America" broadcast, on the very day that Sen. Obama declared his intent to seek the presidency.

I'll never forget it. Just hours after this young Black man declared his candidacy for President of the United States in the shadow of the statehouse that was once occupied by Lincoln, and being wildly cheered by Blacks, Whites, young, old, rich, poor, Jew and gentile, I turned to Tavis' broadcast, hailed as "The State of Black America." Then with my eyes still damp with emotion, the very first thing I see is Dr. Cornel West ranting about Obama, and pointing out that he wasn't impressed.

He suggested that Black people should be asking Obama, "How deep is your love for your people" and Where is your money coming from?" Then he went on to suggest that people associated with Sen. Obama didn't warrant our trust. But what was most instructive about his comments was what he didn't say. He, nor Jesse Jackson on FOX news, nor the St. Petersburg hecklers, had one critical word to say about McCain, or any of the hordes of Republican politicians that's been cutting our throats for the past seven years - and I've never even heard it rumored that Jesse thought Bush should be castrated.

So at this point it has become abundantly clear that we have a serious problem in the Black community, and we need to confront it in a head-on and brutally forthright manner. The problem is glaringly clear, and now, undeniable. Many of us suffer from a severe case of self-hatred that we tend to cloak in petty grievances that have absolutely nothing to do with reality.

GROSS HYPOCRISY:
WHEREVER I CAN GET MINE

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that Black people become unquestioning zombies in support of everything that Obama does - after all, he is a politician, and ALL politicians need to be kept on a short rein. In fact, I am still, highly critical, and highly disturbed by Obama's weak-kneed support of the recent FISA legislation. But in that case we're talking about his support for modifying the United States Constitution and diminishing our right to privacy. Everyone should speak out in protest on such issues. I cut off my monthly financial contribution to his campaign in response to that act. So I'm not an adherent of blind devotion, but I do believe in adhering to common sense - and common sense dictates that you don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

But in the case of the St. Petersburg hecklers, and many other Black nitpickers, some are trying to hold Obama hostage to their narrow, self-centered agenda, and others are flat-out trying to sabotage his effort because they seem to believe that Obama's national influence and celebrity tends to diminish their accomplishments and standing in the community. That's not only sick, selfish, and self-defeating, but it's Naderian in its stupidity. What sense does it make to say, if you don't give me everything I want, I'm going to help the efforts of your opponent, who will assuredly give me nothing? The only possible way of defining such a stance is self-hatred, and gross stupidity.

HEY, AREN'T YOU THE ONE WHO SAID
I COULDN'T BE TRUSTED!!!?

The St Petersburg hecklers provided McCain with the best moment he's had during this election. McCain couldn't have paid for better publicity if he had hired those brothers - and anyone old enough to remember "Cointelpro" will recognize that's not beyond the scope of possibility. Thus, the behavior of those brothers, and the banner they held up before the world might as well have said,

"DOWN WITH BLACK PEOPLE. WE'RE TOO STUPID TO EMBRACE LIBERATION."

The Obama Haters: Rev. Jeremiah Wright Strikes Again

AND THE IRONY IS, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT
HE MEANS - TO HELL WITH AMERICA.
THIS IS ABOUT ME AND MY WOUNDED EGO.

At a Chicago Teacher’s Union event to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Rev. Jeremiah Wright said that while the civil rights leader proclaimed “I have a dream,” Obama says...“I have a drone.” A very witty quip coming from the good reverend, but I’m curious, why don’t these haters ever seem to have anything negative to say about the GOP? It’s very curious, very curious indeed.

President Obama is charged with the responsibility of preventing Al Qaeda and other terrorist from getting their hands on Pakistan's nuclear weapons - which, by the way, are essentially right around the corner from where they located Osama Bin Laden. So what would the good reverend have the president do, back-off and pray that the Lord protect us from a nuclear attack?
.
In addition, drones actually SAVE many lives during a war, because with drones we have the option of waiting until the target's family is away from the targeted area, as oppose to simply lobbing missiles into a location blindly. So people like Wright, Tavis Smiley, and Cornel West don't know what they're talking about - and actually, they really don't care. They don't care how many people are being killed in Afghanistan, or anywhere else in the world, and that includes our inner cities right here in America. If they did, instead of running around the country selling books, doing $30,000 an hour speeches, and chasing photo-ops, they'd be in the trenches of the inner cities with their sleeves rolled up, and trying to educate our young people.

All these people want is an issue - ANY issue - that they can use to criticize President Obama. But it is incumbent upon the Black community to explore exactly WHY these people are so hostile toward our first Black president, because it's a serious dysfunction in the Black community that plays a major role in our failure to move forward as a people.
.
As I've said many times before, I think it's a simple matter of 'bligotry' - (Black-on-Black bigotry). Black people are a product of the very same racist society as White people, so many weaker-minded, and egomaniacal Black people are just as bigoted toward other Blacks as any racist Hillbilly. They tend to suffer from one of two modes of thinking. Conservative Bligot: "Things wouldn't be so hard on me if it weren't for the rest of these ignorant niggas." Liberal Bligot: "Just because that nigga lied his way into the White House, he thinks he's better than me."
.
By and large, Black people are reluctant to accept simple bigotry as an explanation for the behavior of virulent Black Obama haters, because we are reluctant to except the fact that even the most stupid Black individual has more sense than to be bigoted toward his or her own people, but the evidence clearly demonstrates that the dysfunction is pervasive throughout our community. What do you think is responsible for the carnage and loss needless loss of life in our inner cities?  The reason for that is clear - our young people don't value Black life, and they got that attitude from us. When was the last time you either saw, or heard, of someone perpetrating a drive-by while wearing a sheet?  You won't, because there's no longer any need for a Klan, because we're much more efficient than they could ever be in carrying out their work for them.

We're the only ones who don't recognize this phenomenon. The corporations and business community uses bligotry against us all of the time. I was a union rep and an EEOC specialist for twelve years. That's how I began to recognize what was going on. I'd be willing to bet that over 95% of Black workers have been either the victims of bligotry, or have seen it in action on their jobs.
.
Businesses and corporations across this country will routinely elevate a carefully selected group of Black people into middle management for no other reason than to abuse and discriminate against their other Black employees - the United States Postal Service is notorious for the tactic. The reason for the tactic is because it insulates the corporation from lawsuits. It is next to impossible to file a successful discrimination suit against a corporation for the behavior of one of their managers against a worker of the same race.
.
So again, bligotry is pervasive throughout the Black community, and it's being used to great effect to undermine Black progress. And Black-on-Black hatred is exactly what's at work in the vitriol being hurled at President Obama, and the Black community needs to put these bligots on notice, because they're causing division, and that undermines everything that the president is trying to do for the Black community.   

 .
That's what makes it so disgusting. The behavior of these haters is not just an ignorant, petty, and self-serving mode of thinking, but the people who indulge in it are more than prepared to undermine the entire community to nurture it. That's why all you hear such people talking about is how incompetent or disloyal Obama is.  And that's in spite of the total irony that they tend to give the Republican Party a complete pass - a group that's on a determined and single-minded mission to drag not only the Black community, but ALL poor and middle class Americans, PASSED the Jim Crow era, to the kind of existence that predates the Great Depression. How can you claim to love your people and do that? The fact is, you can't. The haters' mere claim that they love their people is irreconcilable with their behavior.

We've already discussed inner city violence, but now consider the ridiculous criticism by the haters' that President Obama's not doing enough to prevent the death and carnage in our inner cities. The fact is, there is absolutely nothing that President Obama can do to keep one young person from killing another. The only thing that's going to stop that is education - and not an institutional education that they can get from a book, but a cultural education in common sense, a love for self, and a love for community. President Obama can't give them that. WE have to give them that. There are some things that even a President can't do, and legislating common sense is at the very top of that list. Only we can educate our children.

So now that it's clear that many of these Obama critics are nothing more than walking criticisms looking for an issue (many of them didn't even latch on to drone issue until their poverty bus broke down), let's return to foreign policy. People like the good Rev. Wright and others have absolutely no idea what kind of information President Obama is getting across his desk in his condition reports every morning. So the mere fact that they continue to blindly shoot off their mouths regarding the president's actions, without having any idea of what he's is responding to, is clear evidence that all three of the men mentioned above, along with their supporters, are prone to shoot from the hip without knowing what they are talking about.
.

Thus, the bottom line is, while these Obama haters would have us believe that Obama is in Afghanistan just killing women and children for the hell of it, or for the benefit of the oil companies, that’s a myth. He’s trying to make sure that YOUR family is not blown up by angry religious fanatics who think that God will bless them if they blow up the United States.

.

We must constantly keep in mind that while war, and the killing attendant to war, is an ugly business, it is very much a reality in the world we live in. So again, if we have to lob missiles into an area filled with innocent people - since hiding behind human shields seems to be the terrorist's preferred mode of defense - the drone is a far better alternative than just blindly firing missiles into a location filled with women and children.

So that said, and documented, what’s going on with all of these Black haters? The Black community is going to have to start addressing this like it's a Black psychological dysfunction similar to Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, because there’s clear evidence that this is Black-on-Black bigotry (“bligotry”). What evidence do I have of that? Cornel West said the following:

"When you’re trying to talk about issues that affect the people, name calling get’s in the way. Name calling is nothing but another weapon of mass distraction." - Cornel West.

.

So it's clear. Cornel West knows that he's being a nonproductive distraction. In addition, these Black haters never have anything positive to say about Obama, no matter what he does, and they never have anything at all to say about the people who are ACTUALLY trying to cut our throats - the GOP. Think about it.

I'm not here to defend President Obama, because as I pointed out in previous articles, I have an issue or two with some of his policies myself, just like I've had with EVERY White president. But I think we owe this brother the benefit of the doubt. He's plagued with enough problems in having to deal with world affairs and our domestic crisis, while at the same time, having to fight off racist Republicans and envious, self-serving turncoats like Tavis Smiley and Cornel West. So we shouldn't add yet another problem to his plate by forcing him to have to worry about whether he has the support of his own people.
.
To be quit frank, I think there are only two kinds of people in this world - good people, and bad people. In addition, I believe the battle over race was a part of the last war. Those who are enlightened recognize that the current battle is over class, because the current powers that be don’t care any more about poor and middle-class White folks than they do Black people. Most White people recognize that fact. That's why Obama is president.  So while I often write about what’s in the best interest of the Black community as a whole, I rarely make race a part of my personal political calculations.
.
But I consider the presidency of Barack Obama a unique situation, and what we’ve been watching with respect to many Black Obama critics should be regarded as a teaching moment, because it represents a cultural dysfunction that’s been played out thousands of times over the past four hundred years. Many of us have heard stories about Black self-hatred all of our lives, but due to President Obama’s high profile we now have the opportunity, as an entire culture, to see it being played out in all of its ugliness for the very first time.
.
But of course, there are going to be a few of Obama's critics who are going to ask, "What are you saying, that Obama should be above criticism just because he’s Black?" Of course not, and the people who pose such a ridiculous question know that’s not what I’m saying before they even ask it. But just asking such a disingenuous question should also serve as a teaching moment - it shows the extraordinary lengths that such people will go to mask their "bligotry."
.
Questioning President Obama’s policies is not the problem - it’s the mean-spirited way in which it’s being done. In fact, Black haters are not merely questioning Obama’s policies at all. More often than not these people are simply using policy differences as a pretext for making slanderous assertions about the president’s character as a whole - he’s a "war criminal," "a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats," "a Rockefeller Republican in Blackface," and even, "He has a certain rootlessness, a deracination" [WHAT!!!?].  Notice that three out of the four slanders are racial in nature, and these quotes are from just one man - Cornel West.
.
None of the criticisms above were legitimate attempts to address the president’s public policies. They were racial slanders, clear and simple. That clearly demonstrates that many Black Obama-haters are not nearly as interested in addressing public policy as they are in attacking the man himself. These slanders also demonstrate the fallacious allegation that people who object to their criticism are merely Obama cheerleaders. That's simply not true - what we’re against is what we’ve always been against - racist attacks.
.
But even those haters who have the good sense to refrain from blatant, racist attacks often make themselves known by going over the top in their allegations regarding policy. They’ll often say things like, "Obama is a part of the machine." But since we’re not privy to the information that Obama is basing his decisions upon, nor his motives for making any given decision, any allegation being made about his being a part of any "machine" are wholly without supporting substantiation at best. Critics who suggest this are merely commenting on what things LOOK like to their jaundiced eye - or what they're trying to convince you to think they look like - without having a shred of evidence to support their views. Their allegations have no more basis in fact than that of the birthers.
.
The reality is, being the first Black President of the United States, Obama can’t approach the nation’s problems in the same way that they were approached by his White predecessors. In many cases he has to take a circuitous approach to addressing issues in order to prevent the GOP from mischaracterizing his efforts with their very special kind of malevolent spin. Thus, the way that things may look, may not always be what they seem. So anyone who would lend comfort to the most steadfast enemies of the Black community by helping to drag this Black man through the mud is on what my good friend, Playthell Benjamin, would call, a fool’s errand. 
.
There were people in the Tea Party who were consistently calling Obama a terrorist sympathizer, right up until he brought Osama Bin Laden’s head home in a bag. Bush spent nearly eight years and close to a trillion dollars trying to pull that off with no success, but Obama did it with three helicopters and a handful of courageous men without busting a sweat bubble - and he did it while America thought he was just kickin’ it.
.
So this brother ain’t no punk, and he’s not the kind of person we should second guess without very good cause.  So yes, I think everyone in the Black community should get behind this brother - period. If we have a comment on policy, we should voice our concern, but we should do it politely, and very respectfully. Because while Obama is, and should be, the president of ALL of America, he is also the most high profile representative of the Black community in the entire world. So to be disrespectful of him, is to be disrespectful of us; and his success, is our success. 
.
With regard to Cornel West, I can only say this - any Black man who tries to publicly engage in the Dozens against the first Black President of the United States cannot be regarded as a serious intellectual. He deserves very close scrutiny, because his behavior is not only disrespectful of the president, but it betrays a gross disdain for the Black community as a whole. So he can say whatever he likes about his motives, but his behavior lends comfort to the most dedicated enemies of the Black community. Thus, the issue is not even debatable - the stupidity he’s engaged in amounts to tap dancing for the Klan.
